May Newsletter

It’s still OUR Summer!

To welcome Summer 2017 without addressing the challenges of high water levels would be remiss. The 19.3 trillion liters of water that fell on the Great Lakes in April and May created historically high levels of water in the St. Lawrence River that continue to challenge each and every one of us. Damages and disappointment from the high water are obvious and everywhere. So too, however, are numerous examples of our collective resilience and determination to manage the high water. Docks have been built on top of docks, dead slow/no wake is the boating norm, and, yes, rubber boots have replaced topsiders to access many of our river docks, and we’re still boating and enjoying our amazing 1000 Islands playground!

We continue to remind everyone to use caution and be respectful while boating on the River. Please remember NO WAKE/DEAD SLOW within 600’ of Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River shorelines. Boat safely and very slowly around others’ docks, boathouses & property to prevent damages from wakes.

While the water levels continue to fluctuate with high winds and more rain, we hear and see an increasingly optimistic and hopeful approach by individuals and businesses to make the best of Summer 2017. Yes, the very essence of a Canadian summer is often defined by weather but let’s remind ourselves of the many other cherished summer experiences that we can still enjoy. Friends and family gathering together, guests discovering the 1000 Islands for the first time, the smell of the BBQ and campfires, and kids of all ages boating, tubing, fishing, wake-surfing, swimming, and simply having fun.

The desired message of this newsletter is to recapture the spirit of Summer and support the summer experiences that we can still enjoy. It’s still OUR Summer; the time of the year that we look forward to, and what brings us all together in our boating community. In the end, despite his best efforts, the Grinch wasn’t able to steal Christmas, nor will he frustrate our efforts to have an incredible Summer. There are summer memories to create and our families and friends are counting on us.
